Summary

The earldom of Pembroke was created by King Stephen in the 12th century as a means of controlling the troublesome Welsh and has since been recreated another eleven times.

During the Wars of the Roses, two Earls of Pembroke played crucial roles in the dynastic battles between the houses of York and Lancaster. Jasper Tudor, the uncle of Henry and his constant companion for many years, was a key Lancastrian player whilst his nemesis, William Herbert, led Edward IV’s army to defeat at the Battle of Edgcote.

Discover more about these two remarkable men, along with some other famous holders of the title (including, somewhat bizarrely, Anne Boleyn!).
