Best-selling author Toni Mount will explore the weird and wonderful world of Medieval Medicine in this entertaining, illustrated talk.
‘Medieval Medicine’ conjures horrors for us, although no one could allay the fear of plague, medieval physicians could provide cosmetic procedures, women’s sanitary products and predictions of the sex of unborn babies. Whilst medieval surgeons performed life-saving operations (sometimes with anaesthetics); they also knew a few tricks to lessen scarring. Yet alongside such expertise, some still believed that unicorns, dragons, and horoscopes supplied vital medical ingredients – and the caladrius bird could predict recovery or death.
In this weird, wonderful, and occasionally beneficial world of medieval medicine Toni Mount will guide us through the labyrinth of unlikely remedies, leeches, roasted cats, and red bed curtains.
N.B. No animals, large, furry, or mythological, were harmed during the preparation of this talk!
